Hip Joint Replacement

Why is it needed and what is it

The Hip joint is a ball and socket type of joint and its functioning including the functioning of prosthetic hip implants are entirely dissimilar. Hip Replacement surgery is the rescue when conservative treatment fails to provide relief in cases where the hip has been damaged. The incidence hip damage needing hip replacement is low in this part of country as per our experience. There are various reasons due to which a hip joint may get damaged. In young adults the hip may be damaged due Rheumatoid Arthritis or AVN hip. AVN of hip is a disease in which the blood supply of the hip bone gradually decreases causing the bone of the hip to get damaged and eventually lead to obliteration of the hip joint. In old age most hip get damaged due to age related arthritis known as Osteoarthritis or due damage after a hip fracture surgery fixation failure. Present literature evidence and orthopaedic consensus suggest total hip replacement surgery in all cases of hip ball fractures in elderly. Besides the satisfactory reduction in pain, results include improvement in sleep, better mobility, range of motion and quality of life.

In a total hip replacement surgery, artificial parts called prosthesis or implant, that substitutes a joint are used to replace the damaged parts of hip. The prosthesis consists of metal components: a socket, ball, and stem. The outer shell of the socket is usually made of metal and the inner shell consists of plastic, or ceramic; or the entire socket may be of plastic.
